Our Heritage

Greencore Northamptons' state of the art sandwich production facility is a far cry from its humble beginnings.

The company was founded in 1926 by Henry Telfer and his two partners who began trading meat pies from bicycles across London.  The pies, known as Tickies (the South African Slang for 3d), were an instant success and the business flourished to become one of the UK’s leading meat pie manufacturers.

The company’s long association with the sandwich industry began in 1937 when it made its first sandwiches for local street parties for the coronation of George VI and soon after the business changed its name from Ticky Snacks to Henry Telfers.

In 1974 the company relocated from London to Northampton and despite continuing to make small volumes of sandwiches, meat pies remained its core business.

The adventure really began in the 1980’s when the visionary management team spotted an opportunity in the retail sandwich market and very soon meat pies became a thing of the past for Henry Telfers.

1990 saw the business invest £4m in the building of a state of the art sandwich factory for its customer M&S and since then it has added two further factory units on the same site at Moulton Park, as well as installing the world’s first, fully automated sandwich line in 2004.

During its history the business has had a number of different parent companies and became part of chilled food group Uniq plc in 2001. In September 2011 Uniq plc was acquired by Greencore Group.

Our People

Simply put, we believe our people are the very best in the business and that’s why we are committed to investing in their continued development to ensure they have every opportunity to fulfil their potential.

Colleagues from all areas of the business have access to regular training and development activities ranging from Basic Food Hygiene to Degrees in Food Manufacturing and our Learning & Development team is proud to have delivered over 12,000 hours training this year alone.

Here at Northampton team work is a given, cultural diversity is celebrated and we love to reward success, which is probably why over one third of our colleagues have been here for over 10 years and 19% have worked for us for more than 20.
