Top tips on nutrition and hydration

Good nutrition and hydration are vital for a healthy lifestyle and all-round general wellbeing.

For good nutrition, we should aim to:

  • Eat at least five portions of a variety of fruit and vegetables every day
  • Base meals on higher fibre starchy foods like potatoes, bread, rice or pasta
  • Have some dairy or dairy alternatives (such as soya drinks)
  • Eat some beans, pulses, fish, eggs, meat and other protein
  • Choose unsaturated oils and spreads, and eat them in small amounts

For good hydration, we should aim to drink 6-8 glasses of water a day. It does more than just quench your thirst. Our bodies need fluids for:

  • Digestion
  • Blood circulation
  • Waste removal
  • Temperature control
  • Fighting disease
  • Brain function

Without good nutrition and hydration, the human body will deteriorate, leading to illness and disease.

Food for thought

Though medicine continues to advance and branch out in many ways, nutritionists and health experts continue to praise the benefits of certain foods. Eating healthily has been shown to reduce the risk of obesity, cardiovascular illnesses, and even certain types of cancer.
