I want to once again thank all of you for the role you continue to play in supporting our business during this difficult time. As you’re aware, I’ve made it clear over the past few months that it has always been my intention to recognise our food heroes, who have continued to work in our sites and depots – making and delivering food that has kept, and continues to keep, the nation fed.

These colleagues have had to leave the safety and security of their homes on a regular basis to work at our sites and depots and we want to specifically recognise the fact that they have done this. While we have put lots of steps and processes in place to keep them safe, we want to acknowledge the exceptional circumstances that they have had to work in.

To recognise this, we have decided to give all our weekly paid colleagues and a small number of our monthly paid colleagues, who work in business units, who do similar roles to our weekly paid colleagues, and who have been based on site for the majority of the crisis, an additional payment for every hour they have worked during April, May and June. This will be back dated and paid next month. We will be writing personally to everyone this applies to in the middle of July and sharing further detail with them.

I’m sure you’ll agree with me about the vital role these colleagues have played. I would love to be in a position to financially recognise everyone right now, but we need to ensure we continue to protect our business and secure it for the future.
